How to Choose the Right Dining Chairs for Your Luxury Dining Table

A beautiful dining table sets the stage, but the chairs decide how the room actually feels. They’re what your guests touch, sink into and linger in long after dessert. They also make up most of what you see around the table. Six or eight chairs carry more visual weight than the tabletop itself.

In our guide to choosing the perfect luxury dining table, we looked at shape, size and floor plan. This guide completes the picture. It explains how to choose luxury dining chairs that fit your table and your space, and that stay comfortable through long dinners with family and friends.

1. Start With the Relationship Between Chair and Table

The most common mistake in dining room design is choosing the table and chairs as two separate decisions. They should be chosen as a pair.

Height.
Most dining tables stand around 75 cm high. For comfortable dining, leave roughly 25 to 30 cm between the top of the seat and the underside of the tabletop. This gives enough room for your legs without making you feel sunk below the table. Check the seat height, not just the overall height, and ask about it when you visit a showroom.

Arms and aprons
If you choose chairs with armrests or a wide, curved frame, check whether they slide under the table edge when not in use. Some tables have a deep apron, the frame just beneath the top, which can stop an armchair from tucking in. If the chairs can’t tuck in, they will need more floor space.

Legs and bases
Picture the chair legs next to the table legs or pedestal. A slim-legged chair beside a heavy sculptural base creates a pleasing contrast. Too many legs crowded together under a small table can look cluttered and be awkward to sit at.

2. Measure Your Seating Width Before You Fall in Love

Chair width decides how many people your table can comfortably seat. It varies more than most people expect.

As a rule of thumb, allow the chair’s width plus about 10 to 15 cm of breathing room between each chair. On a 240 cm table, that works out roughly as follows:

  • Slim-profile chairs around 46 cm wide, such as our Isabel and Jackie, need about 60 cm per seat. That fits around four chairs per long side.
  • Generous lounge-style chairs around 60 cm wide, such as our Celeste and Fynn, need about 75 cm per seat. That fits around three chairs per long side.

Neither option is better. It depends on how you live. If you often host big family gatherings for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya or Deepavali, slimmer chairs let you seat more people. If you usually dine as a household of four and value comfort over capacity, wider chairs turn every meal into a relaxed occasion.

Also remember the space behind the chairs. Aim for at least 90 cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or cabinet, so guests can pull out their chairs and others can walk past.

3. Choose Your Comfort Style: Upright or Lounge-Like

Luxury dining chairs tend to fall into two broad comfort styles.

Tall-backed, upright chairs support good posture and look elegant and architectural. At 87 cm tall, Isabel and Jackie give full back support without taking over the room. They suit formal dining, compact condo dining areas, and homes where the dining table also serves as a workspace.

Low, wide, enveloping chairs feel closer to an armchair than a traditional dining chair. Celeste, at 75 cm high and 60 cm wide, has a relaxed, low-slung presence. Fynn, at 68 cm deep, is made for long evenings when conversation carries on well after the meal. Both work especially well with round or oval tables, where their curves echo the table’s shape.

Swivel chairs are a third option for open-plan homes. When your dining area flows into your living room or kitchen, a swivel base lets guests turn towards the conversation. Explore swivel designs such as Ely, Blues, Vivienne and Archibald in our dining chair collection.

4. Pick Upholstery That Suits Malaysian Living

In a tropical climate, upholstery affects more than looks. It decides how the chair feels, ages and stands up to daily life.

Microfibre leather, as used on Isabel and Fynn, has the refined look of leather and is easy to live with. Spills can usually be wiped away, which makes it a sensible choice for families with young children or for anyone who entertains often.

Suede textiles, as used on Celeste and Jackie, add warmth and a soft, tactile richness that suits more intimate dining rooms. They reward a little care, such as regular gentle brushing and prompt attention to spills.

Wherever you live, keep your dining area well ventilated or air-conditioned. Also keep upholstered chairs out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade colours over time. Most of our chairs can be made in other materials, so if you love a silhouette but want a different finish, our advisors can guide you through the options.

5. Coordinate Colour and Material

Your chairs don’t need to match the table exactly. In fact, the most sophisticated dining rooms rarely do. Aim for harmony instead:

  • Echo one material. A warm ashwood chair frame, like Fynn’s, pairs beautifully with a timber-toned tabletop or wood elements elsewhere in the room.
  • Contrast the top. A marble or ceramic tabletop looks softer and more inviting with textile upholstery around it.
  • Carry one colour through the room. Link your chair upholstery to a rug, a cushion on your sofa, or the tone of your artwork. This helps the dining area feel part of the whole home rather than a separate zone.

6. Consider Mixing Styles

A growing trend in luxury interiors is using two chair styles at one table. For example, you might place two wider armchair-style pieces at the ends and slimmer chairs along the sides. This creates a sense of hierarchy and occasion, gives the “head” seats extra comfort, and keeps the long sides efficient. The key is to keep one shared element, such as upholstery tone, leg finish or overall height, so the mix feels deliberate.

7. Always Sit Before You Buy

No photograph can tell you how a chair feels after an hour of dinner conversation. Before committing, sit in the chair at a table of the right height. Pull it in and out, lean back, and cross your legs. Notice whether your thighs clear the table and whether the backrest supports you where you need it.
